Woman Tortures Nephew For Failure To Recite Quran

A magistrate court on Friday in Ikorodu, the state of Lagos, accused a 29-year-old woman, Ummi Bashiru, for allegedly abusing her cousin for his inability to recite the Quran.

Bashiru, a resident of the Gbodo area, the Ewu Owa community in Ikorodu, is being tried for an attack, a crime he refused to commit.

The prosecutor, Sgt. John Ibreredem told the court that the defendant committed the crime on April 26, in her home town.

He further revealed that Bashiru attacked the 12-year-old cousin who lives with her by using an electric wire and a stick to strike him separately.

"The suspect is an aunt for the boy, who usually hits him heavily with horse ships, machete and other dangerous weapon that has left permanent scars on his body.

"The last maltreatment woke the neighbors who reported it to the police.

"She mistreated the boy with electricity because he can not recite the Koran," Iberedem told the court.
He said the crime was in violation of Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Bashiru, however, bail was granted in the sum of N200,000, with two securities in equal sum by the chief magistrate, F.A. Azeez

Azeez, who adjourned the case until May 31st.
