Man U Goalkeeper De Gea Wins Premier League Golden Glove Award

David De Gea has been considered the top goalkeeper in the Premier League for years and can now claim an elusive piece of hardware to support it.

Despite his long track record of success, De Gea had never received the Premier League Golden Glove prize, which is awarded every season to the keeper who saves the cleanest sheets of the campaign.

The Manchester United-goalkeeper earned his 18th clear zero score of the season in a scoreless draw against West Ham United on Thursday, and made sure he finished on top of the 2017-18 Premier League-charts for the category.

The Ederson of Manchester City, who is currently in second place, has 16 clean sheets after he has served the 3-1 victory of his club over Brighton on Wednesday and with one remaining game he can no longer play his counterpart on the red side of Manchester to catch.

The prize, which was awarded for the first time in 2004-05, has seen six different winners since its inception. Joe Hart, then of Manchester City, and Petr Cech, with both Chelsea and Arsenal, are the career leaders with four Golden Gloves each. The former goalie from Liverpool, Pepe Reina, has won the prize three times.

Thibaut Courtois, Wojciech Szczesny and Edwin Van Der Sar took the prize home once.

De Gea becomes the first Manchester United-keeper to win since Van der Sar in 2008-09, and Spain's first goalkeeper since Reina in 07-08.

With 18 clean sheets of the season, De Gea has already achieved the highest total in the category since Joe Hart ended up in that number in 2012-13.

If he can add another in the last match of the Premier League season of Manchester United, at home against Watford on Sunday, then De Gea's is the best Van Der Sar to beat 21 in his victory season.

The best for every goalkeeper since the prize started was in the debut season, when Petr Cech picked up 24 clean sheets for the title-deserved Chelsea side by Jose Mourinho.

It is also the third time that a goalkeeper from Mourinho has won, with Cech taking it both previous times, the second time in 2013-14.

Although it is the first Golden Glove of De Gea, he has certainly received the honor of the Premier League before, and he is named after the team of the season's competition at five different moments, including this campaign.
