Security : Senate President Promised To Fast-Track Passage of Police Reform Bill

Today, the Senate resolved to fast-track the passage of the Police Reform Bill. This resolution came following a Point of Order raised by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, regarding the investigations of the Nigerian Police into the attempted assassination of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.
Senator Abaribe, who called on the Nigerian Police to treat the attempt on the Deputy Senate President’s life with utmost seriousness, called on the Senate to demand a thorough investigation on the matter.
Speaking on the issue, President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, stated that the passage of the Police Reform Bill would help to address issues of professionalism and conduct in the Police Force.
‘The Police Reform Bill which we have put forward, touches on issues that will address the professionalism that should be enforced in the Nigerian Police Force. What we are seeing here is lack of leadership in providing a non-partisan professional approach for some of these issues.
“Therefore, we must pass the Police Reform Bill and fast-track it so that we can effectively address these existing issues. Let us ensure that we pass this Police Reform Bill within the next two weeks so that we do can a public hearing on it,” Saraki said.
Other Senators who spoke on the matter, also emphasised the need for professionalism and a proper investigation into the case.
“All we are asking is that due process be followed and a proper investigation be conducted,” said Senator Mao Ohuabunwa
“The Nigerian Police conducted a very myopic and porous investigation to a case as serious as this. This is unacceptable and it is not normal. We are here to speak for the people, every Nigerian should feel safe and secure in their environment,” said Senator Dino Melaye.
“Let’s be conscious of the importance of the right to life and take it very seriously. This issue is important not just because it happened to one of us here, but because the life of every Nigerian is at stake. For this to be dismissed as a mere burglary shows that there is a cover-up somewhere,” emphasised Senator Shehu Sani.
The Senate therefore resolved to urge all security agencies to thoroughly investigate the attempted assassination of the Deputy Senate President, and ensure the speedy passage of the Police Reform Bill.
